The Vocations Service
The Diocesan Vocations Service is based at the Old Friary, Gordon Road, Nottingham, NG3 2LG. Fr. Paul Newman is the Bishop's Vocations Director and is assisted by Canon Jonathan Cotton, who is also chaplain to the Diocesan Youth Service based at Crich. The Fathers may be contacted at 0115 950 1064 or by sending
e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Old Friary was once a Franciscan Convent and has been converted into a House of Discernment, where gentlemen considering a vocation to the Holy Priesthood may live and work alongside the Fathers and the parish community of Our Lady and S. Edward. These men undergo a simple program of formation as they approach their decision to enter the formal programmes of the seminary system.
The Diocese currently has five students for the priesthood in formation at two seminaries in England. The Rev. Mr. J. Whitby-Smith is a deacon in his final year at the seminary of the archdiocese of Westminster, at Allen Hall. The Rev. Mr. P. Smith is a deacon in his final year at the pontifical seminary of S. Bede, outside of Rome. Mr. W. Carpenter is a final-year student at the seminary of the archdiocese of Birmingham, at S. Mary's College, Oscott. Mr. L. Gamsi is in his fourth year at S. Mary's College, Oscott. Mr. J. Owens has just begun his course of formation at S. Mary's College, Oscott.
