Fr. Peterken's 90th Birthday celebrations at S. George's and Holy Spirit, Derby

#

On behalf of Fr. Peter and his family, we extend very sincere thanks to all who came to the parish evening on Thursday at S. George’s Social Centre. Fr. Peter began the event with a presentation, in words and pictures, on the Pope’s call to holiness in today’s world entitled “Gaudete et Exsultate” (Rejoice and be Glad). Pope Francis begins his apostolic exhortation with words of Jesus to his friends of all time, who will be persecuted or humiliated for his sake. As we know from the Gospels, Jesus himself was persecuted, humiliated and executed for being true to his mission from God Our Father. Jesus, living the basics of the religion of the Old Testament, which are love of God and love of others to the best of one’s ability by prayer and good deeds, nevertheless was rejected and crucified. Pope Francis spells out some essentials of living in today’s world which will help anyone who takes him seriously to grow and develop in the way of Jesus the man, for others, as Friend and Saviour of human beings. The parish party which followed Fr. Peter’s exposition of Gaudete et Exsultate was attended by about sixty parishioners. We enjoyed a lovely buffet prepared and set out by Karan O'Connor and helpers. Fr. Peter then cut his 90th Birthday cake, made by one of his three daughters, and we sang Happy Birthday. During the evening, Fr. Peter received gifts and cards form lots of parishioners and the proceeds of a collection at Holy Spirit Church, together with a donation from S. George’s. On Saturday, celebrations take place with about 50 family members at a local restaurant, Littleover Lodge. We wish Fr. Peter many more happy years in God’s service.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: "I would like to send my heartfelt thanks to all who came along last Thursday to celebrate my 90th Birthday. I was overwhelmed with the attendance of so many of you and the lovely fellowship shared. Many thanks for all the gifts, to all who helped with the technical support and to the refreshment AND buffet team. I will be donating the generous collection from S. George’s and Holy Spirit of £220 to the Derby Night Shelter.

"Special thanks to Fr. Alan, who is my good friend as well as a fellow priest. I am so blessed to be able to be part of such a wonderful, vibrant and active parish. Final thanks to our faithful Parish Assistant Karan who enables both Fr. Alan and me to get on with our duties without worry.

"God Bless you all."

– Fr. Peter, “90 Years Young.”
