Walsingham has been filling people's faith back up for nine hundred years. Something about the place does it: the procession, the quiet of the shrine, the Mass at the end. People arrive one way and leave another.

The Diocese of Nottingham's annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham takes place on Saturday 20 June 2026. The theme this year is Mary, Cause of Our Joy. Bishop Patrick will celebrate Mass at the Catholic Shrine. The pilgrimage is organised by Fr Neil Peoples and Deacon Seamus O'Looskan.

Everyone is welcome. You don't need to be part of a group or have been on a pilgrimage before. Some parishes across the Diocese are organising coaches; if you'd like to travel with others from your area, check with your parish priest. You're equally welcome to make your own way there.

FAQ

Is this open to everyone, or do I need to be part of a parish group? Everyone is welcome to come independently. Some parishes are organising coaches, worth checking with your own parish if you'd like company for the journey. Either way, there's a place for you.

Bishop Patrick is celebrating Mass, do I need to book for that? No. Mass is open to all pilgrims on the day.

What is Walsingham? A village in north Norfolk where, according to tradition, Our Lady appeared to a Saxon noblewoman in 1061 and asked for a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth to be built. It became one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in medieval England and was restored as a Catholic shrine in the twentieth century. Pilgrims traditionally walk the Holy Mile, the final approach to the Shrine, in prayer, often barefoot.

Is the Young Adults overnight trip suitable for families? Yes, young families are explicitly welcome. Contact Charles Archer for details.

How do I get there? Walsingham Shrine is in Little Walsingham, Norfolk, NR22 6BP. Check with your parish about coach travel, or make your own way by car or public transport.
