‘Were you there when they crucified my Lord?’ This poignant question from the traditional Good Friday hymn echoed through the streets of Nottingham as around 400 people joined together for a momentous Ecumenical Act of Witness on Good Friday.

The moving procession marked the first time such an event has taken place in the city in at least 15 years, representing a significant moment of Christian unity and public witness.

Faith Leaders Unite

Bishop Patrick McKinney, Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Nottingham, and Bishop Andy Emerton, Anglican Bishop of Sherwood, led the procession alongside the Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Professor Veronica Pickering MBE HAC, and faith leaders from different Christian communities across the city.

The Procession

The morning commenced with pilgrims gathering at 10am for a time of prayer at the Cathedral Church of St. Barnabas (Nottingham Cathedral). The procession then departed and made its way through Nottingham's city centre, pausing in Old Market Square at the steps of the Council House. Following a time of silence, the Salvation Army Band led those gathered in singing 'Were you there when they crucified my Lord?' The crowd then continued to St Mary's Church in the Lace Market where, after a concluding service, hot cross buns and warm hospitality were enjoyed by all.

A Powerful Witness

It was truly inspiring to witness Christians from across Nottingham coming together in unity to witness to Christ on this most sacred day of the Christian calendar. The presence of 400 pilgrims walking through the city centre served as a powerful and visible reminder of the enduring faith of Nottingham's Christian communities.

This historic event demonstrated that we are indeed stronger together, transcending denominational boundaries to bear witness to the Passion of Christ in the heart of our city.

The Diocese of Nottingham extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us and made this historic moment possible.
