The Diocesan Jubilee of Educators was also celebrated on this day.
Well-wishers packed into St Barnabas Cathedral, in the centre of Nottingham, to celebrate the significant milestone for Bishop Patrick McKinney.
While the day marked this significant anniversary for Bishop Patrick, the Mass was also the Diocesan Jubilee of Educators Mass, the culmination of Bishop’s Day; an annual diocesan occasion, which brings together Catholic educators from across the diocese to reflect on the Catholic mission of schools.
The day began at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nottingham, with a Celebration of the Word, led by lay chaplains from the three diocesan multi-academy trusts.
Participants were then invited to hear keynote speaker, David Wells, deliver two talks on the importance of Hope in Leadership, in keeping with the theme of the Jubilee Year.
After lunch, teachers, lay chaplains, school governors, Trust Directors and central teams, Heads of RE and employees of the education service journeyed from the hotel to the cathedral, for Mass at 2:30pm, celebrated by Bishop Patrick.
During his homily, Bishop Patrick emphasised that those who work in education, must depend on a personal relationship with Jesus, to carry out their vital work.
Bishop Patrick McKinney was born in Birmingham in 1954 and then moved to Ireland, Co Donegal when he was very young, before returning back to Birmingham.
He was ordained to the priesthood on 29th July 1978 and began his priestly ministry in the Archdiocese of Birmingham.
Bishop Patrick, who holds a License in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, has a wealth of experience in teaching and education.
During his life as a priest he has taught at St Mary’s College, Oscott, and he was later appointed Rector in 1989 and remained in post for ten years.
After some time serving as a parish priest throughout the Archdiocese of Birmingham, he was appointed tenth Bishop of Nottingham in 2015, and adopted the motto “Seek the Face of Christ.”
