Following the Holy Rule of Saint Benedict

Benedictine Hermits, The Hermitage of Our Lady and S. Benedict, Elston

About us

We are a small community of hermits priests living the heremitical life, following the Holy Rule of Saint Benedict and according to the code of Canon Law 603.

For the most part we feel called to a life of silence, solitude, prayer and penance, for the good of the whole church and salvation of all peoples. Therefore our vows of Poverty, Chastity and Conversion of Life are lived out mainly in a contemplative way, although we are not cloistered. The foundation of our daily life based on Benedictine spirituality are the daily Divine Office (5 part) Holy Mass, time of Meditation and Devotions, especially adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament. Manual work around the hermitage and Study. In this the whole person mind, body and spirit are offered in a daily ever growing closer to God.

Our ‘Hermitage’ is dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Benedict and can be found in the village of Elston on the A46 five miles from Newark on Trent. The Hermitage is the our home and the centre of our life and ministry within the greater Diocese of Nottingham, here is maintained at all time an atmosphere of quiet prayerfulness and contemplation where the presence of God may be found.

Fr David & Fr Richard are available for spiritual direction and can be found supporting our brother clergy in parishes.
