It was with particular sadness that Bishop Patrick heard of the death, late on the evening of Saturday 1st July of Father Kevin Gradwell. May Kevin now hear those words of our Saviour: well done, good and faithful servant. Please pray for the happy repose of Father Kevin, as well as for his family, especially his children James and Victoria.
Born on 29th August 1950 Kevin studied for the priesthood for a time before meeting his wife, Susan, and settling into the parish of Saint Mary, Marple Bridge. After his career in the police Kevin continued to feel a call to vocation and indeed had been very supportive of students in the English College, Valladolid, where he drove a van each summer to take new students’ belongings to the seminary. At his retirement Kevin offered himself to the diocese, and following four years of formation he was ordained to the permanent diaconate on 6th March 2010. Kevin’s wife sadly died not long after, and Kevin then offered himself for priestly ministry. After two years of further study at Allen Hall seminary, London, Kevin was ordained to the priesthood in Saint Barnabas Cathedral by Bishop Patrick on 12th July 2015. With his background in the High Peak he was appointed to work alongside Father John Cairns in Saint John Fisher and Saint Thomas More parish, Chapel-en-le-Frith, together with assisting in Saint Mary, Marple Bridge, and the Annunciation, New Mills, parish. In September 2020 Kevin moved to take up the role of parish priest in Saint Mary the Immaculate parish, Grantham, but after only a few months he retired, and moved to a small apartment in Marple.
