Once again hostility in Israel and Palestine has erupted in bloodshed. Following the traumas of the last week healing and reconciliation seem more distant than ever, and worse is feared to come. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, has called a day of fasting, abstinence, and prayer for peace and reconciliation, tomorrow, 17 October.

On behalf of the Bishops of the Holy Land the Cardinal writes, “We ask that on Tuesday, October 17, everyone hold a day of fasting, abstinence, and prayer. Let us organise prayer times with Eucharistic adoration and with the recitation of the Rosary to Our Blessed Virgin Mary. Although most probably in many parts of our dioceses [in the Holy Land] circumstances will not permit large gatherings, it is possible to organise simple and sober common moments of prayer in parishes, religious communities, and families. This is the way we all come together despite everything, and unite collectively in prayer, to deliver to God the Father our thirst for peace, justice, and reconciliation.”

You are invited to join Caritas and fellow Catholics online at 5.00PM for half an hour of mainly silent prayer.  A link to register on Zoom is provided below.

Please sign up there, and you will be sent an email with the link to join.  (If it does not appear in your inbox, please check your spam.  You may also join by phone on 0330 088 5830.

God of mercy and compassion
we place in your hands
the Holy Land and all its people
guide and support all those
who seek to establish that justice
which alone ensures true and lasting peace.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
